Coffee roasting: a tale of serendipity
Julius Meinl I. opened his first shop in 1862, selling spices, rice, tea and green coffee beans. At this time, coffee was sold raw and then baked at home in the oven or on a pan. The story goes that the maid of a Viennese household rushed into the shop, crying that she’d burnt the expensive coffee beans. The idea of roasted coffee was born – and Julius Meinl I. invented the roasted coffee category, setting new quality standards.
